Where the facts come from

Every factual claim on this site links to its source. This is the full list.

How we checked

Each fact was written alongside its source. Our build script stores the source text and, for every fact, checks that the key words and figures really appear in it. 125 of 125 facts currently pass that check. Where sources disagree, as they do on the number of species, we say so rather than pick a winner. Where we couldn’t find a primary source, as with an often-repeated 1812 Isle of Man quote, we left the claim out.

Main sources: the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, Hedgehog Street (PTES and BHPS), PTES, the Mammal Society, the IUCN, Manx Wildlife Trust, the RSPCA, the Merck Veterinary Manual, the Isle of Man Wildlife Act 1990 and Wikipedia (for widely established biology).
